History

Once inhabited by the Dyirringany Aborigines, the area was first explored by Europeans when Bass and Flinders travelled up the Pambula River and Lake while on a voyage south in 1797. As a port the early Merimbula served as an important gateway to the district. During the Kiandra goldrush of the 1860’s Merimbula was the staging post for thousands of prospectors beginning the arduous trek from the coast to the Australian Alps.
